On Thursday, May 1, 2025, Kanawha County Schools brought together some of our most talented young writers for the annual Young Writers Tea. Each school’s writing winner from across the county was invited to join us for an afternoon of celebration and recognition.

During the event, the county-level winners had the chance to read their award-winning essays aloud, sharing their creativity and hard work with friends, family, and school staff. It was a special time to highlight their voices and the amazing stories they’ve created.

The celebration didn’t stop there — the next day, these students were honored again at the West Virginia Young Writers Day at the University of Charleston. This gave them an opportunity to connect with other young writers from around the state and take part in workshops designed to inspire and encourage their writing journey.

Duncan Bishop, an eighth-grade student at John Adams Middle School, also earned third place in the 2025 West Virginia Young Writers State Competition for his essay, Dreams of Heaven. He presented his work during the Kanawha County Young Writers Tea.

We’re proud of all our young writers and excited to see how their talent and passion will continue to grow.
